Gonio

Gonio is a defunct village in the Khelvatshavri Municipality of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara in Georgia. On January 1, 2013, the settlement was incorporated into the city of Batumi. Some facts about Gonio: First mentioned by Pliny the Younger in the 1st century as the main Roman stronghold in Colchis (as Georgia was then called). From 1547 to 1878, Gonio was occupied by the Ottomans. Following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, Gonio became Georgian again. Gonio is home to a radar station. The main attraction is the ancient Gonio-Apsaros Fortress, one of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses in Georgia. Gonio is a resort village located 12–15 kilometers from the center of Batumi. The beaches here are covered with fine pebbles, and the sea is renowned for its clean and transparent water.
